Frequently Asked Questions
What background and musical skills do I need? While previous singing experience and sight-reading skills aren't required, they can be very helpful. Not to worry though, there are plenty of experienced members who will be delighted to help you learn.
We're especially seeking basses and tenors, and all voices are welcome!
What does it cost? Dues for now remain at $120 each semester. This includes the cost of some music which you get to keep. Plus the one-time cost of concert attire for new singers. Cost is never a reason to not join SDG. Singers may apply for partial or full scholarships in return for helping us with various tasks. Please speak with a board member at your first rehearsal, or email us at Info@SoliDeoGloriaCS.org to inquire about options.
Concert Attire? -Women wear a custom-designed shirt with a choice of bottoms. The cost for women is around $100. Order info and sizing are provided at rehearsals. -Men wear a complete tux outfit if possible. A black tux or black suit coat with a tux shirt, black bowtie, and black pants may be substituted. New tuxedos can be found online for about the same cost as the attire for women.
What if I cannot sing in one of the concerts? The real magic of Soli happens in the rehearsals. We have many members with big lives and full schedules. If you can’t make it to a particular event or can only come and sing in rehearsals, that is fine. Each semester we provide sign-up sheets for each concert to help us plan for the choir members who can be there.
Where does the money go? Dues help cover a myriad of expenses such as rehearsal space, concert venue, copyright expenses, sound support and recording, streaming video, conductor, accompanist, concert programs, instrumental musicians, musical scores, and administrative expenses. Dues also support our scholarship program for young musicians. Because we attempt to keep dues as low as possible to allow for more participation, these dues plus the donations we receive from concerts do not cover our financial needs. We actively solicit generous donations from choir members (only for those who can afford it) and help with fundraising activities.
Are there obligations? Yes. We are a family of singers who have come together to share the gift of this special music with our community. This collective endeavor does entail certain expectations of effort and commitment to harmonize as one voice and deliver music that is both beautiful and heartfelt. We request: -Individual dedication, both before and during rehearsals. -Practice between rehearsals. (We provide current practice playlists for our members) -A commitment to having fun and making new friends. -An openness to grow and learn as a musician and community member.
