Hodie Christus Natus Est – chant We are singing this using neumes. A neume is the basic element of musical notation before the invention of the five-line staff notation. The word is a Middle English corruption of the originally Greek word for breath (pneuma). Neumes are used to indicate the general shape but not necessarily the exact notes or rhythms of the chant. This particular chant is an antiphon to the Magnificat, sung in the Roman Catholic Church on Christmas Day vespers. The translation is: Today Christ is born; today the Savior appeared. Today on Earth the angels sing, archangels rejoice. Today the righteous rejoice, saying: Glory to God in the highest. Alleluia. Stoplight Voice Tips This week as you are sitting in your car at a stoplight, do some stomach-strengthening exercises. You'll sing better if those muscles are toned; stronger abdomen muscles can also help control a wobbly vibrato. So, breathe in and then hiss out sixteen, making sure that you move your tummy muscles. Another good exercise is to pant like a puppy dog. |
